Waterproof Mattress Covers for Hospital Beds and Incontinence at Home

If you care for someone at home with a hospital bed, or manage incontinence at night, the mattress is the thing that gets ruined first. A waterproof cover keeps urine, sweat and spills out of the foam and springs, where they cannot be cleaned. Bargoose makes three covers for this. Which one you buy depends on how you want to clean it, and on whether you need the 36 by 80 inch size that many home hospital beds use.

Quilted waterproof pad: machine washable

The Commercial Waterproof Quilted Mattress Pad has three layers: polyester felt on top, a waterproof barrier in the middle, and polyester felt underneath. The barrier is our own quiet vinyl blend, made to stay quiet under a sheet, and the felt means the person lying on it feels fabric, not plastic. It goes in the washing machine (warm, tumble dry on medium, no bleach), which matters when you are changing it every day.

It comes in Hospital Twin (36 by 75 inches, anchor bands), Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King. Choose anchor bands (a 2 inch elastic band that tucks under the mattress corners) or a fitted style with a 16 inch stretch knit skirt. The fitted style stays put better on deep mattresses and for people who move a lot in bed.

6-gauge vinyl fitted cover: wipe clean

The Commercial 6-Gauge Vinyl Fitted Mattress Cover is a solid vinyl sheet that fits over the top and sides of the mattress. It has welded seams, and you wipe it with a damp cloth. It is not machine washable. It is the better choice for heavy leakage, because nothing passes through vinyl, and for beds where you want to wipe the surface down in a minute instead of stripping and laundering. Vinyl does not breathe, so some people find it warmer than the pad.

Sizes include Twin, Hospital Twin XL (36 by 84 inches), Twin XL, Full, Long Full, Queen, King and California King, in 9 inch and 16 inch depths.

Elite zippered encasement: the 36 by 80 inch option

The BedBug Solution Elite Zippered Mattress Encasement zips around all six sides of the mattress, so nothing reaches the mattress from any direction. The 36 by 80 inch, 9 inch deep size is listed on the product page as Semi-Truck Mattress "Size A". It is the same size as many home hospital bed mattresses, so measure yours and match it. This is the choice when you want the whole mattress sealed, not just the top.

Which one should you choose

Pick the pad if you want to launder the cover and want something soft against the skin. Pick the vinyl cover if you want a wipe-clean surface and the most reliable barrier. Pick the Elite encasement if your mattress is 36 by 80 inches or you want it enclosed on all six sides. Many households buy two of the pad so one is always on the bed while the other is in the wash.

The pad and the vinyl cover protect the top and sides of the mattress. For a full enclosure that also keeps bed bugs and dust mites out, see our mattress protectors and encasements for home.

Questions

Will it fit my hospital bed?
Measure the mattress length, width and depth before you order. The Elite encasement is made in 36 by 80 inches at 9 inches deep. The pad comes in Hospital Twin at 36 by 75 inches, and the vinyl cover in Hospital Twin XL at 36 by 84 inches. If your size is not listed, send us the dimensions and we will quote a custom cover at our contact page or (516) 255-1736.

Is the cover noisy?
The quilted pad is built to be quiet. Solid vinyl makes more noise than fabric.

Can I use a fitted sheet over it?
Yes. Put the cover on the mattress first, then the fitted sheet over it.

Do these treat or prevent any medical condition?
No. They are mattress protection, made to keep fluids out of the mattress. Ask your care provider about anything related to skin care or pressure injuries.

Do you sell to home care agencies and care facilities?
Yes, in cases of 6. See wholesale mattress protectors by the case or call (516) 255-1736.
