What institutional laundering does to a mattress encasement

Independent ISO 6330 testing on the fabric used in the BedBug Solution® Elite, what the results mean for a laundry that runs beds on a turnover schedule, and an honest account of what has not been tested yet.

The results

Shrinkage is the result that matters most to a housekeeping operation. An encasement that shrinks stops fitting the mattress, and an encasement that does not fit gets left off the bed. At −0.6% lengthwise, an 80-inch queen loses under half an inch of length. Widthwise is the tighter number at −2.1%, which is why the Elite is cut with the stretch knit running across the mattress.

Colour change at grade 4 to 5 on the ISO grey scale means the change is between negligible and none. Negligible pilling matters for guest-facing properties, because a pilled encasement reads as worn even under a sheet and a pad.

What this test does not tell you

Three wash cycles at 40°C is a dimensional-stability test. It measures whether the fabric holds its size, colour and surface after laundering. It is not a service-life rating, and we are not going to present it as one.

An institutional laundry runs hotter than 40°C, typically 71°C or 160°F for healthcare disinfection, with alkaline detergent and mechanical extraction. A domestic-wash result does not speak to that process. Barrier-retention testing after repeated industrial laundering is in progress. Ask us for the current documentation before you write a specification.

On the cycle counts you will see quoted

Wash-cycle claims circulate in this category without a method attached. When you see one, three questions settle whether it means anything:

• Cycles of what? A cover can survive a wash and stop being waterproof. Ask what performance was retested afterwards, and against which standard.
• At what temperature? A cycle at 40°C and a cycle at 71°C are not the same event.
• Tested by whom, in what report? A number on a marketing page with no laboratory, no method and no report number is not a specification.

We would rather publish four measured results and tell you what is missing than publish one round number you cannot check.

What the warranty covers

Every BedBug Solution® Elite encasement carries a Lifetime Limited Warranty against seam failure, zipper failure and lamination failure. A cycle count is a proxy for exactly those three failure modes. The warranty is the commitment the number stands in for, and it does not expire at cycle 200.

About the tested material

The reports identify the tested article as "Spring/Sleepy's Knit + TPU," the laminated stretch-knit fabric used in the BedBug Solution® Elite encasement, tested on behalf of Bargoose Home Textiles through our manufacturing partner. Country of origin on the test report is China. Domestic manufacturing is available for contracts that require it, and we are happy to walk through which components are domestic and which are imported on a given order.
