Mattress Pads, Mattress Toppers and Mattress Protectors – Oh My!
Like most consumers, the world of basic bedding can seem to entail a lot of language that appears universal – until you find out it’s not. A great example – pillow cover versus pillow encasement. Yup – there is a difference! So, we thought we would take some time to debunk the language around the mattress pad vs mattress topper vs mattress encasement. Curious to know more? Keep reading to get to the good stuff…
What is a mattress pad?
A mattress pad is generally identified by its light padding and quilted top. It can be found on top of the mattress, under the sheets. The primary purpose of a quilted mattress pad is to add a layer of comfort while also protecting the mattress from stains and pillows. At Bargoose we offer a wide array of mattress pads to fit you or your customers every need.
What is a Mattress Protector?
As implied in its name, a mattress protector’s main job is to protect the mattress. It can be identified by its lack of padding and most resembles a thin sheet-like layer that is installed directly on top of your mattress, under the sheets. There are several benefits of installing a mattress protector. First and foremost, installation of a mattress protector can dramatically slow down the rate at which a mattress will slowly suffer from wear and tear; internal fibers in a mattress will break down and stretch and diminishing the mattresses’ “like new” performance. In addition, high quality mattress protectors, such as Bargoose’s line of protectors and encasements, offer moisture wicking capabilities and are breathable, helping to prevent a warm night’s sleep. Lastly, using a mattress protector on your mattress and/or box spring can offer considerable protection if you are looking to avoid common pests such as bed bugs and common allergens such as pollen, mold, and dust mites.
Ok – So What is a Mattress Topper then?
While mattress pads are fit to the size of your bed, a mattress topper is a layer of soft padding (often memory foam) that lays on top of the mattress, but under the fitted sheet, to enhance the support and comfort of a mattress. Simply laid on top of your mattress, the mattress topper will be held in place by the fitted sheet. Through high-tech padding materials, a topper will typically form to the contours of your body, providing customized, evenly distributed support while eliminating hot spots that can cause pain.
As a secondary benefit, many mattress toppers will feature special fabrics that wick away moisture and manage heat to keep your cool and comfortable. By the simple act of placing additional inches of materials between you and your mattress, a topper will provide an extra layer of protection from stains and perhaps some spills. However, a topper isn’t designed to provide any real protection. Bargoose does not offer mattress toppers at this time.
